Creatures of the Moment

When I’ve been focusing on the same subject matter for awhile, I start craving something fresh and new. Hence, this “Creatures of the Moment” tangent is born. Ever since I was a child I’ve been a collector. I started out collecting interesting rocks, then beach findings, and objects that I’ve come across in my travels. I never really knew what I would actually do with my curiosities; like a magpie I kept them because I found them fascinating. Sometimes I find inspiration in the colors and textures of my collection and that can lead to details I add to art pieces. For some reason it never occurred to me to actually play with the objects, and have them interact with one another. As children we play with everything and that exploration process is the foundation of creativity. I recently started to change the way I brainstorm and work out new ideas based on that concept. My art sessions have become me in the center of a mass of materials I find inspiring; and plenty of options for exploring them. The concept for “Creatures of the Moment” is that these sculptures are not permanent. They exist only as long as I allow them to; they are creatures created on a whim and deconstructed in the same way. Some of them are reminiscent of mythological creatures in part because of their strangeness and the narratives they seem to suggest. Overall, this was an interesting exercise that broadened my perspective and techniques for my creative process.
